One of the more novel predictions is that retirement for workers in the US will become obsolete.
Now there are gloomy predictions about the Gen X Retirements.
And Boomers are already being told that they will work until their 80's...if they make it that long.
BUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE...?
It assumes that there will be a Republican Government in the US for the foreseeable future.
That may start to change, at the margins, this November.
BETWEEN THE TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH AND THE UNFUNDED WARS THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION COULD HAVE FINANCED NATIONAL HEALTH CARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY FOR DECADES TO COME....
THIS WOULD HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR AMERICAN COMPANIES TO STAY IN THE US...AND NOT FLEE TO COUNTRIES THAT ALREADY HAVE NATIONAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS...AND PENSIONS PROTECTIONS FOR THEIR RETIREES.
The fallacy in the current reasoning is that Americans are too dumb to demand a European Style Social Safety Net...and that they will never "catch on" to the Republican looting of the economy.
It is true that Republicans spend mightily to distract the dull American public with...unfunded wars, flag burning and anti-gay "Constitutional Amendments" and now "Official English" and "Jesus wants you to be poor" nonsense religiousity, but over the long run...people will wise up. Perhaps as early as this November.
It may take a few catastrophes...and the with the media firmly in the hands of the moneied elites now...reporting will be bias against the working and middle classes.
But sooner or later people will catch on.
The 401k System is already a cruel joke as it was never designed to be the sole source of retirement income for those workers who have a 401k....
And with the stock market on the verge of a long slump...interest in Government Pensions and Social Security will revive.
A huge shift in public opinion could occur in the next election...the Democrats may be forced to walk the walk...not just talk the talk. Health Care and Pension Reforms are demanded by the public...even if the K-Street Kongress wants to ignore it and party on as usual.
And whatever is not changed in November...well, just give them more of the same...because;
The public does catch on eventually.
