It's sad to see IBM no longer making PCs. After all, they invented the PC for all practical purposes, and IBM made Bill Gates what he is today through their mistakes and bad judgment.
But BAD JUDGMENT is what American Business does best these days!
My hunch is that IBM will not be alone in SELLING OUT TO CHINA!
In fact, this could be an ominous trend as American companies decide that they "can't compete in low margin businesses" anymore.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE ARE SELLING OUR SEED CORN!
If you don't make things you can't develop things. There is a dangerous "de-skilling" of the workforce that occurs when you no longer have a "factory floor" to play on!
It's like learning to play basketball from reading a book! With some things you just have to go out, and schlep around, and make mistakes, before the inspiration comes.
AMERICAN BUSINESS HAS LOST THE WILLINGNESS TO TAKE CHANCES, BECAUSE OF ITS OBSESSIVE FOCUS ON THE QUARTERLY BOTTOM LINE!
And, God forbid that you might pay an employee too much!
BETTER TO JUST SELL THE WHOLE DAMN COMPANY TO CHINA THAN OVER-PAY FOR "THE HELP!"
Well, that's the way it is in America nowadays. Everyone and everything is just one big sell out. And no. The sale will not "help" IBM's other businesses. They will suffer too.
TECH HAS BECOME A COMMODITY, AND US BUSINESS DOES NOT "DO" COMMODITY INDUSTRIES! ---THEY OUTSOURCE THEM. The problem is that with the global diffusion of technology EVERYTHING is a commodity these days, or will be soon!
SOMETIMES IT SEEMS THE ENTIRE US ECONOMY IS BEING OUTSOURCED!
Except in key industries like War-Making and Pizza Delivery! And even there we are seeing some problems now!
IBM WILL SOON JOIN TWA AND EASTERN AIRLINES AND A BUNCH OF OLD TECH NAMES FROM THE PAST IN THE BUSINESS JUNKYARD.
IS AMERICAN BUSINESS BECOMING "JUST A BRAND NAME?"
A SELL OUT TO THE HIGHEST BIDDERS, WITH THOSE EVER WEAKER "GREENSPAN DOLLARS" TO SPEND? ASAP.
Will the strengh of the US economy be reduced to being merely a "gummed label" on a box from China!
It seems so......
