The Obvious Problem is the off shoring of good jobs to low wage nations...yet Democrats continue to spout the discredited notion that Free Trade "Opens up Markets for American Goods"....

The South never really got over the Civil War... They have been looking for things to complain about constantly...
Oddly...Federalism as Washington knows it is not a sure thing even now...
The South has been the odd man out in the union from the start... that is why Washington and Jefferson were pushed as early Presidents...to keep the South on board with the Constitution...and that only lasted until 1861...
The US has been run from New York and the East Coast from the start...and it still is...and that is why the South is still a problem... There is more to Red States and Blue States than politics... Its about wealth, power and control... America is a bi-coastal power...Atlantic and Pacific...
Fly over Country...and the deep South are not really players on a national level...and that is getting worse by the day... Hence the Tea Party....
If the current national Depression turns out to be "unsolveable"...as well it may... It is very possible that the union will break up before the end of this Century... And the South will go its separate way...as a Latin American style low wage zone attempting to compete with Asia and South America...
If the nation is in a perma-Depression... a lot of scape goats are going to be needed...and quick...
Likely there will be a move for the South to pull out of the Federal Union before the end of this Century...

There were no winners in tonights Republican debate...in fact none of them made the case for switching Presidents...!
Obama is doing just fine...especially compared to the Republican alternatives...
Where they differ with Obama is mostly in areas that make no sense... Like a flat tax for millionaires...or just abolishing health care reform with no ideas on what's next...in fact Romney made a spirited defense of Romneycare...that was very Republican...stop the freeloaders...!
These guys are contenting for the Republican nomination that isn't worth squat in 2012...
Obama is simply going to win reelection...and all this blather is just going to be forgotten after November...WHEN THESE GUYS JOIN THE HERMINATOR ON THE TALK SHOW CIRCUIT...

At the state and local government level Republicans do offer some push back to the public sector unions...who are often in control of politics locally...
The problem is that reduced private sector incomes...can not support the old style public sector wages and benefits...
On that level I actually agree with the Republicans...
Old style unions...private sector unions...had a "social justice" function in the 20th Century... Workers Comp, Child Labor, Workplace Safety, Pensions and Health Insurance, Social Security, Civil Rights, etc...but much of that good stuff has now been PUT INTO LAW...
As an instrument of social policy unions did their job...in the 20th Century... But merely to extort higher and higher wages and benefits...in a declining economy is not benefiting the public now...
WHAT OBAMA MISSED...
TO bring jobs back from China is going to take something more than lower wages for American Workers... Some protection of the domestic market is needed...
If there is an economic theory that shows how extremely low slave wages are sustainable for Western Consumer Capitalism...I'm all for it...
The notion of protection is as old as the trading economy itself...its ancient...!
Notions of Free Trade have always been political not economic... Its not really a valid economic theory in the long run...in its extreme it falls apart...just as extreme Keynesianism is doing now. But Keynes admitted that when he said "in the long run we are all dead"...
Valid economic theory demands some kind of equilibrium and sustainability...otherwise everything collapses... As we see now...!
When Free Trade was developed...it was all about maximizing the "natural advantages" of different nations...to produce things... You buy bananas from Columbia...not Canada...! Etc...
It was never about low or slave wages as happens in China and parts of Asia... The Era of greatest growth in the US was an Era of greatest protectionism...
People wrote editorials thanking Pres. McKinley for: "Protecting us from the pauper labor of Europe"...in 1900!! This, long before the Internet or this current incarnation of the so called "Global Economy"

1. Canadian style Single Payer Now... paid for by...
2. Cuts in the War Budgets at the Pentagon...cuts of 1/2 are needed.
3. A $10 tariff on every Chinese made I-Pod and TV that comes into the US...just to keep the roads in good shape for delivery of Chinese made goods sold by US corporations....
4. Reversion to a progressive tax system...with high rates on the mega wealthy who take the most out of the system...
Unfortuately ...because of the special interests and a right wing that is mostly duped by nonsense... it may take another big collapse before any of this happens...
