Friedman writes in today's NYTimes:
"There is nothing that the Europeans want to hear from George Bush, there is nothing that they will listen to from George Bush that will change their minds about him or the Iraq war or U.S. foreign policy. Mr. Bush is more widely and deeply disliked in Europe than any U.S. president in history. Some people here must have a good thing to say about him, but I haven't met them yet."
Yet any number of people in America have acted as ENABLERS for Dubya to reach this sorry state. Including Mr Friedman.
Friedman, hoping for Israeli victory, and/or annexation of the West Bank has backed a war that most rational people knew from the start would be a disaster.
Indeed, when Rummy's "tongue-less" dancers failed to materialize in Basra strewing flowers, I knew this was not going to be a cake-walk. (Actually I wrote the first "Who lost Iraq?" posting about 12 hours after the invasion started! See blog)
Then, Greenspan caved on the nutty tax cuts, and the wild spending during Dubya-One, and now the deficits are through the roof.
This was all so obvious, yet Mr G too acted as an ENABLER for Dubya's odd and misguided notions.
ALAS, WE ARE ALL LIKE CHILDREN IN A DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY NOW.
SOME OF US ACT AS ENABLERS, OTHERS AS VICTIMS.
NO ONE WANTS TO STAND UP TO THE "OLD MAN" AND TELL HIM THE TRUTH AND PROTEST THE DAMAGE HE IS DOING.
BUT IF THOSE WITH THE BULLY PULPITS AND BIG SOAP BOXES HAD DONE THEIR JOBS PROPERLY,.....NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPEN.
And that includes Friedman....who apparently is still afraid to "speak up"---rather today letting those "kooky" foreigners do the talking even now.
But, who would go against the Pentagon Lukudnics? Who would challenge the Neocons?
Few in the liberal east coast media even dared.
And now we're stuck with "them" for four more years..... IT BEHOOVES THE MAJOR MEDIA TO START DOING THEIR JOBS AGAIN. MAYBE SOMETHING CAN BE SALVAGED FROM THIS WRECKAGE EVEN YET.......
