In the New York Times today, Safire claims Character is Destiny then praises the Republican Party's "character."
BUT, IF REPUBLICAN CHARACTER IS NOW OUR DESTINY? WE'RE SURELY DOOMED!
Consider:
The Republican "victory" in November was shallow and regional at best, and was almost totally dependant on: The Three "R'"s.
RELIGION, RACISM AND AM HATE RADIO!
If you really think about it, all of the above Republican "charater points" are based on a sense of defeat and gloom; That only thinly vails a defensive "holier than thou" hatred of their fellow human beings. You see it all the time in their smirk and in their swagger.
The Holier than Thou Crowd revels in their hypocritical Religious superiority, and in their "closet racism."
And alas, AM hate-speech Radio and Fox News are the vehicles through which they spred this national poison to the unsuspecting semi-literates who are it's target audience.
The Republican Party today is preaching a kind of "Ghost Dance" politics to the American Bubba Classes.
The Ghost Dance mentality derives from the American Indians in the last half of the 19th Century who developed a "Cult of the Savior" wherein a "new leader" would magically arrive, and "bring back the old days" and banish the white man from their lands.
In modern complex societies the Ghost Dance often takes the form of Fascism! As it did in Germany in the 1930's.
When people strongly desire to "go back" to something; it's a sign that they dread their futures.
REPUBLICANS ARE THE PARTY OF FEAR AND HATE AND JINGOISM THESE DAYS. AIDED BY THE THREE "R"s OF RELIGION, RACISM AND HATE RADIO.
REPUBLICANS ARE THE "GHOST DANCE" PARTY OF AMERICA.
IF DUBYA AND THE REPUBLICANS TRULY ARE OUR NATIONAL CHARACTER TODAY? AND THUS OUR DESTINY.
WE'RE DOOMED.......
