I can understand Bernie Ebbers wanting to take the witness stand in his own defense, but my hunch is that he will do more harm than good.
Ebbers surely must realize that for someone in his position Crimes of Omission are as bad as Crimes of Commission..... The CEO simply can't say: "I don't know were the 100 Billion went"
.....And then with the testimony about his margin calls....I think his goose is cooked with this jury.
Ebbers had motive and opportunity.......and as any Agatha Christie fan knows that's good enough to convict. And can Ebbers reasonable argue that he was "merely" the unwitting beneficiary of all this malefeasance....? I don't think so.
If Martha got a crash course in "jail house chili" Ebbers should get the same...... Ignorance of the law is no excuse....and neither is ignorance of fraud on the company books, especially when you derive some benefit from the "evil deed."
Damning circumstantial evidence will convict in this case........
