Krugman is really the ONLY Public Intellectual in America today...
No one else has his role of telling the truth no matter what...
Surely not Friedman....and even David Brooks is looking more intellectual than conservative these days...yet it was the "conservative" side he was hired to "shill for" at the NYT...all other "pundits" are strictly agenda based shills for one side or another...
There are almost no public intellectuals in American today; and that is why our public "dialogue" is so banal and trite... Gay Marriage...not Health Care. Abortion...not the Trade Deficits.
The entire public dialogue in America today is designed to continue the looting of the economy by the domestic elites and International Capital...no matter what the increasingly obvious consequences of that looting may be...
HENCE, THIS PITIFUL ELECTION ABOUT "WEDGE ISSUES" ....NOT PUBLIC POLICY!!
I surely will NOT vote in the coming election...I quit voting several election cycles ago...I'm disgusted with the near total corruption; and do not want to be an "enabler" of or participant in the present mess....
When things get bad enough....the public will demand change...
But alas, we aren't there yet... we are getting closer every year... A huge majority of duped Americans now say the economy is "bad" ...yet the Wall Street/Washington crowd are "running on" the much touted strong economy...
Perhaps continued bursting of the real estate bubble will give the needed attitude adjustment... Only not just yet... The changes this year will be at the margins and will be based on the perception of the economy in fly over country...and that could "surprise" many bicoastal pundits and the elites who have hired them.
My hunch is that the Democrats are going to win big in the Kongessional Elections coming soon... Perhaps 40 to 50 seats in the House and 10+ in the Senate...this could be the wake up call to Washington and Wall Street that they can't rely on wedge issues forever...sooner or later their looting of the economy will have to stop...and some kind of realistic Progressive Agenda will be needed....
That said, there should be no illusions about measures the elites and International Capital will take to defend their indefencible looting...
Just look at Mexico today...! America in the 21st Century will resemble a Latin American nation in the 20th Century....
It's not just illegal Mexicans that are coming across the border...it's their military dictatorships and oppressive economic systems as well...!
