THE ROAD TO SERFDOM....is a well known book on economics that Glenn Beck is touting now...
The Hayek "Austrian" school of economics basically hates planned economies...and wants market forces to work no matter how brutal...
What Hayek misses is that Soviet Planned Economies for the backward Eastern Europeans was a road...FROM serfdom...not TO serfdom...
These Eastern European countries were literally in the middle ages in 1914...and in two generations went to a modern urban industrial economy...with planned economies..!
It was a brutal transition...Stalin literally ripped ignorant peasants from their land and put them in the factories...
It was not unlike what's happening in China today...or in the US in the 1870s....
Was it worth it...? Probably not..but at least there are no peasants and serfs in Eastern Europe anymore...
And are "market" forces that much kinder...
