The problem is that the rich today are VERY VERY RICH...
This is not the 50's or even the 80's... Today one multi-billionaire (Ichan) can buy a major company for pocket change...
If you don't tax the ultra rich...who do you tax...the poor...?
The rich get huge breaks from Congress...and the FED is run for the rich only...and they are using their money to off shore jobs ASAP...
Do not feel sorry for the Rich... FEEL SORRY FOR ORDINARY AMERICANS WHO NO LONGER HAVE A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY...
The Rich will do very nicely living in Hong Kong or London or Singapore...there are enclaves for them that are like Royal Palaces... They don't need your pity.
What happen after the Bush Looting Collapsed..was ordinary peoples' incomes plunged...so the Rich got even richer...and of course paid more taxes...
Presently...the rich are so rich...and everyone else is so poor that less than 50% of American CAN PAY any income tax at all...!
If you want to feel sorry for someone...feel sorry for ordinary Americans who HAVE NO FUTURE...UNDER CURRENT CONDITIONS...
