Capital was forced to have some national loyalty...in the old daze...
Because the World Wars acted like defacto tariffs...
The "prosperity" of the 40's and 50's were really a result of the defacto "tariff of the war" ...combined with the deficit war spending...
Free Trade...wherein Capital is free to choose cheap labor...and local labor suffers...is what changed...
I have seen comments from the days of McKinley in 1901...wherein someone was praising the McKinley tariff for : 'SAVING US FROM THE PAUPER LABOR OF EUROPE"...!!
That was in 1900...pre Internet...pre US Free Trade...back when Republicans were protectionists...and liberals were Free Traders...
What has been missed is that Free Trade IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN...A POLITICAL WEAPON...AND NOT A REAL ECONOMIC DOCTRINE...
NOT TO MENTION THE INSANE ECONOMIC DOGMA IT HAS BECOME TODAY AMONG "RESPECTABLE" ECONOMISTS...
The only person EVEN TALKING ABOUT THIS...is The Donald...
With the both current political parties...the looting that International Capital has been allowed to do under free trade...is NOT DISCUSSABLE...!
Its all "education" and "green energy" with these people...the real question is why are they STILL Ignoring the obvious...
What good is education if all the factories are in China where people are paid 40 cents per hour...
The real question should be : Why is this obvious fact not discussable...?
