The notion of unions came into play long before the current social contract was in place...
Unions played an active role in getting pensions, Social Security, Medical insurance for workers and retirees, Protecting children from dangerous work...etc etc...
Much of the UNION AGENDA has been enacted into law...so they are really not as needed as they once where... Additionally...today most unions are in the public sector...because it was the one "industry" that could not move off shore...like steel, rubber, textiles, autos, electronics and the others...
While workers should be able to negotiate...they should not be able to take the public or their bosses hostage...!
Collective bargaining should be limited now...because the social benefit of unions is less needed to protect workers...
If we get national health care...the reason for unions will be even less...
ESSENTIALLY LAWS HAVE PROTECTED WORKERS NOW...AND UNIONS ARE LESS NEEDED...
That is what this is all about...
Right to Work is fine...but labor has to realize that without union "pattern contracts"...auto workers in the south would be paid about $15 per hour...not the UAW pattern of $25 per hour...
Wages are really dependent on the value labor adds to the product... and wages should reflect that relationship...
