There is a lot of anti-Mormon sentiment in the smaller towns in Western states...
Many of these areas would be considered "safe" Republican districts...in most election cycles.
But the competition between Morman and Gentile businesses in small and medium sized towns...have created some anti-Mormon feeling among the non Mormans...
There is also a social isolation in these areas that divides Mormons and non-Mormons...
Romney may have more than the Hispanic vote against him in the west...!
Of course to Eastern Americas...Mormons are not a big factor...just an odd religion that most people know nothing about...except that they see their missionairies in the neighborhood from time to time...
In the west...Mormons are a political and an economic force...that may not be looked on favorably by some non Mormon Republicans...
