Americans are over educated and over paid compared to China...or any of the other places that are taking American Jobs to increase Wall Street profits...
IF you are "educated" in a field in high demand by CORPORATIONS... like data base...sales...high end IT networking...accounting and finance...you might find a job...
IF you are educated in the "wrong stuff"...you wont...
At present ...with an intensely current "skill set" oriented job market...community college "certificate" programs offer the best education for the money...
No...you won't be studying Plato, and Idealism and the Middle Ages...but at $300 per credit hour...who can afford that nonsense...!
Sometimes I think I was the last person with a liberal education...
Starting a business is fine...under normal conditions...but in a depression there is a lack of demand across the board for goods and services... You might "scare up" a few dollars...if you are completely without income...but expanding a business in a depression is a problem...
That said...many people start businesses during depressions...out of desperation...and then grow later when the depression ends...
THE JOB MOST IN DEMAND NOW IS CASHIER...and for that you don't need a college degree...!
