FAKE JOBS! TRUTH REVEALED!
A lot of people probably feel that the so-called "jobs boom" has been
fake. I'm one of them. Here's why:
Today the Fed meets to raise rates for what will probably not be the
last time. Indeed, a series of rate hikes is expected until the Fed
Funds rate is at 3%, or more.
The official story is that the Fed has had it's hands SUPPOSEDLY tied
by the punk jobs market.
In other words, the Fed was "forced" to keep rates UNNATURALLY LOW
until workers were happy!
Now, what's wrong with that picture? Well, since when does the Fed,
or anyone on Wall Street, worry about worker happiness!
INDEED, A HIGHER UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WOULD HAVE BEEN NICELY ANTI-
INFLATIONARY!! GREAT FOR GREENSPAN AND GOOD FOR THE STREET TOO!
So, you're probably asking; WHY THEN THE "FAKE JOBS?"
Here's why: The HYPER-LIQUIDITY had gone on for so long that
commodities speculation was getting to be too Popular among the
investing classes.
THIS MEANT OIL SPECULATION FIRST AND FOREMOST.
AND WITH DUBYA'S GEO-POLITICAL TIN EAR THERE WAS PLENTY OF FUEL FOR
THE RUMOUR MILL TO KEEP THE OIL FIRES BURNING AT LEAST ON WALL STREET.
Not only that, but the speculators were rushing to invest in China
with their hair on fire!
ENTER THE CHINA BOOM, FINANCED IN THE US BY GREENSPAN, ET AL.
The China Boom caused even more speculation. There was a shortage in
steel, copper, wood, nails, and even cement! The China Boom "revived"
the moribund Japanese Economy! Now that is something!
IN SHORT AND IN SUMMARY, GREENSPAN WOULD HAVE HAD TO RAISE RATES SOON
ANYWAY, EVEN IF THE US JOB MARKET WAS IN EXTREME DEPRESSION!
Now, that is not to say that the JOBS BOOM was entirely "cooked up"
by Wall Street and in Washington.
Yet the Plutocracy on Wall Street knows that if they want to keep their beloved tax cuts, they had better damn well come up with a "jobs boom" for the summer of an election year.
And, very likely, there would have been some seasonal spring and summer hiring that could be "fluffed" up with some "fudge factors" to produce the politically and economically "desired result."

WILL IRAQ BURY SADDAM, OR PRAISE HIM!
Saddam's Trial could be a referendum on the Bush Presidency!!
Consider:
How will Iraqis react when they first see their old leader in the
hands of the "new puppet government?"
Will they remember the "good old days" before the occupation, and
their "humilation" at the hands of the "Zionist Tool" and "Great
Satan?" What will the Arab Street think?
REMEMBER, SADDAM WAS "THE MAN" TO MANY ARABS AND MUSLIMS IN THE
MIDDLE EAST. HE "STOOD UP" TO SHARON AND THE BUSH FAMILY. HE WAS A
REMINDER OF THE OLD DAYS OF MUSLIM EMPIRE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
Now, I realize that this IS NOT the view that Americans got from
Chalabi and Wolfie and Dubya.
BUT REMEMBER THIS IS A MULTI-CULTURAL WORLD. IT MAY SURPRISE YOU TO

bring out a DANGEROUS RESPONSE from the Iraqi people.

send "suicide bombers" against Saddam and his lackeys; LIKE THEY ARE
AGAINST THE AMERICAN OCCUPATION ARMY.
See the point? What if the Iranians gassed the Kurds? What if Rummy
supplied the gas to Saddam for his evil deeds against the Iranians?
What if the Iraqi Sunnis don't want to kill Saddam as bad as Dubya
and Rummy want to kill Saddam?
And, do we really want to rehash the 1970's in Iraq and Iran? Who
benefits most from this? Certainly not Dubya!
What if Dubya is more unpopular in Iraq than Saddam by the time of
the trial?
What if the trial is "blacked out" by the government so no one can
see Saddam confronted by his accusers, or hear his responses and
cross examination? How will the Arab World react?
Remember how the Serbs reacted to Slobo's trail? SLOBO BECAME A
JAILHOUSE HERO TO MANY SERBS!
Remember when Mark Anthony said: "I COME TO BURY CAESAR NOT TO

in a most gloomy manner. But will it really be that bad?
POSSIBLY.... CONSIDER:
When Mr G decided that the stock market, the 401ks, and CEO options plans that were "under water," post-bubble, needed some serious "saving;"
HE MADE A FATEFULLY WRONG DECISION;
NAMELY TO GO TO AN ULTRA-LOW ONE PERCENT FED FUNDS.
This has spawned the various and sundry CARRY TRADES that now
burden the economy with a useless and probably destructive
speculation. BUT MR G LOVES SPECULATION AS WE ALL KNOW.
Yet, very likely NO TRULY WORTHY BUSINESS PROJECTS were funded at 1%
that wouldn't have been funded at a more "normal" 3%!
Did 1% rates really save any WORTHY BUSINESS PROJECTS? Doubtful.
TO BE SURE, ONE PERCENT RATES DID GOOSE THOSE OLD BUBBLE JUICES;

According to Tom Friedman, China is "selling" software engineers
three for the price of one from Japan!
Worse yet, the INDUSTRIAL WEST seems doomed to perpetual non-
competitive status, the way things are going.
China is graduating HUGE numbers of engineers and scientists, ALL OF
WHOM WORK FOR A TINY FRACTION OF A WESTERN WAGE.
THIS, OF COURSE, IS NOT NEWS. WHAT IS NEWS IS THAT I WOULD HOPE THAT
SOME ECONOMIC GENIUS WOULD TELL US, SOON, HOW THIS STORY ENDS.
THE NOTION THAT WESTERN LABOR WILL JUST ROLL OVER AND DIE SEEMS
INCREDIBLE. YET THAT SEEMS TO BE THE WALL STREET SCENARIO OF CHOICE.
My hunch is that we are going to see a LURCH TO THE LEFT in the
Western Nations.
IF THE GLOBAL WAGE FOR LABOR IS $5 PER HOUR, THEN THE WESTERN

But, what about those teaming masses who already own a home!
If you cut back on willing and able buyers; there is bound to be a
DECLINE IN PRICES.
And, frankly, that would be a disaster in this TOXIC bubble
environment.
MANY MARGINAL BUYERS AND BANKS ARE NOW UP TO THEIR NECKS IN TOXIC REAL ESTATE DEBT.
AND IF THEY TRY TO SELL PROPERTY BOUGHT AT THE TOP OF THE BUBBLE;
They are no different that those who bought the Internet Bubble at
the top. PRICES WILL FALL!

TAX THE IDLE RICH! HARD.
If Dubya loses this election, it might very well be because of his tax cuts for the "rich."
Indeed, no less a guru than Bill Gross has called Dubya: "THE PRESIDENT FOR THE RICH."
But, there should be some nuance bulit into the tax code.
WHO ARE THE IDLE RICH? LETS TAX THEM HARD!!

WHY BE NORMAL?
WHY BE NORMAL?
Greenpsan must be considering this question everyday now.
It is amazing to think that only a few years ago the Fed Funds rate
was at 6.5%!
And, now it's at a 46 year low of 1%!
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Well, it was really part of Greenspans effort to "save the bubble."
The stock bubble LASTED SO LONG that it became the NEW NORMAL FOR
WALL STREET!
INDEED, BUT FOR THE BUBBLE THE CLINTONIAN GOLDEN AGE MIGHT NEVER HAVE
OCCURRED. IT WAS THE CAPITAL GAINS ON THE BUBBLE THAT PAID OFF THE
BUDGET DEFICIT. AND FLUFFED UP THE JOB MARKETS IN THE 90's.
ASTOUNDINGLY, THE BUBBLE OF THE 1990'S WAS SO COMPELLING THAT IT EVEN
SUCKED MONEY OUT OF COMMODITIES!!
BUT DON'T EVER PLAN TO SEE THAT AGAIN IN YOUR LIFE TIME. INDEED, IT
MAY BE AN ECONOMIC ANOMALY WORTHY OF A FEW BOOKS, AND A PHD
THESIS OR THREE!
Second, the off-shoring of American "good jobs" ie private sector
union jobs, made wage inflation MIRACLOUSLY disappear!

And, the demand from China keeps reminding them very day that they
have found the Holy Grail of Investing for the next decade or two.
What would the economy look like if Fed Funds were back to 6%? Yikes!
For one, a whole bunch of mortgages and other long tern "debt
instruments," like corporate and government bonds, and preferreds,
WOULD HAVE TO BE DISCOUNTED MIGHTILY AND QUICK!
NOTE, GENTLE READER, THIS "MASSIVE DISCOUNTING" ALONE COULD CAUSE A
SERIOUS RECESSION;
AND THE DROP IN NET WORTH AND LIQUIDITY IN DEBT MARKETS COULD BE
WELL,........UNPREDICTABLE!
But fear not, we are told that Greenpsan will be like the man who cut
his dogs tail off one inch at a time, because he thought that cutting
the tail off all a once would hurt the dog too much!
That's the good news! The bad news is that YOU ARE THE DOG!

OUR COMPUTER AGE SHAMELESSLY EXPLAINED!
IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS THE FILE CABINET!
THUS, BEGAN THE DIGITAL OFFICE PHASE OF THE COMPUTER AGE:
Now, persons under 20 years of age may never have actually seen a
REAL file cabinet, and they could be panicked at their first sight of
one. But, I think there is a "file cabinet" on display at the
Smithsonian, or soon will be, for those brave enough to look.
Basically, the file cabinet held what we call "hard copy." Now, this
is not the hard copy of the ancients, not clay tablets, or cuniform
writing of Mespotania. Rather it was "just paper."
The paper that when into these "file cabinets," as hard copy, were
mostly things called "invoices." These invoices were put into the
file cabinets, mostly chronologically, but sometimes alphabetically,
as they came in. And, that's was about all there was to it.
Outside of the file cabinets there were other "paper products,"
called variously, journals or ledger cards or "books."
As the invoices came in, they were "insribed" on to the journals as
a "journal entries."
Then, from time to time, these "journals entries" were written into
bigger ledgers. The ledgers were often rather specific as to the
details of the entry, they weren't just time of entry, or alphbetized
entries. OK?
Eventually, wise men, called "accountants," came into the pre-digital
office, and magically turned the various ledgers and journals
into "reports" and "statements." And, that was about it.
NOW, THIS PRIMATIVE "PRE-DIGITAL OFFICE" WAS FINALLY SUPERCEDED BY
THE "DIGITAL OFFICES" OF THE COMPUTER AGE.
HERE, IN THE DIGITAL OFFICE, PAPER BECAME MOSTLY OBSOLETE, EXCEPT TO
PRINT "HARD COPIES" FOR DIGITALLY ILLITERATE "EXECUTIVES."
AMAZINGLY, File cabinets, journals and ledgers merged into computers
called, SERVERS!
SERVERS HELD EVERYTHING IN A DIGITAL FORMAT, AND EVERYTHING ON THE
SERVER WAS VIEWED ON THE COMPUTER SCREEN, OR ON PAPER COPIES
PRODUCTED BY VERY EXPENSIVE MACHINES CALLED "PRINTERS."
But, these printers were so expensive, that it was decided that they
should be "networked," ie. connected to more than one "workstation"
or computer to save money and time.
THIS, GENTLE READER, WAS THE REAL ORIGIN OF THE "COMPUTER NETWORK!"
So, at this early DIGITAL OFFICE PHASE; Workstations, Servers (for
storage), and Printers where all there was to the DIGITAL OFFICE.
THEN, SOMEONE DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE "NEAT" TO "NETWORK" THE
VARIOUS OFFICES TOGETHER. THAT WAY EACH "OFFICE" COULD "TALK" TO THE
OTHER OFFICES. (Yea, right!)
But, instead of "talking" ONLY to your printer, 20 feet away, you
could now "talk" to the computers down in the basement, or on the top
floor of your building.
THIS WAS CALLED THE "LAN" OR LOCAL AREA NETWORK.
THIS WAS THE NETWORKING PHASE OF THE COMPUTER AGE:
This was the era of Cisco! Hubs and Bridges and Switches and Routers
connected everything!
THEN SOME GENIUS DECIDED THAT ALL OF THESE THINGS COULD BE CONNECTED
GLOBALLY! THIS WAS CALLED THE INTERNET! Any Questions so far?
THE INTER-CONNECTION PHASE IS NOW ALMOST COMPLETE.
THE THIRD PHASE OF OUR COMPUTER AGE IS THE DATA BASE PHASE:
THIS IS WHERE WE ARE TODAY;
Today we want, not only to INTER-connect globally, but to SEE AND
WORK WITH ALL OF THE VARIOUS DATA BASES ON THE INTERNET.

DUBYA'S RELIGIOUSITY: HUCKSTERISM? ETAL
I notice that GLOOM AND DOOM is back at the number one spot, in the
ever unpopular Yahoo Short Selling Groups catagory.
For a while, Short Sharks took over the number one spot. But, they have since "disappeared" apparently. Probably, "went public" or
maybe "private?" Way too popular to be of any value in my opinion!
Amazingly, Short Sharks could tell you exactly when a certain 6 cent
penny stock was going to go to 8 cents! Alas, there is still plenty
of demand for "tout sites" on the Internet.
Here at GLOOM AND DOOM the approach to stocks is less certain.
I've tried charts, and fundamental analysis, and momentum, and candle
sticking, (I almost burned the house down with that one!), nothing
really works.
SO, I'VE TAKEN THE DEFAULT POSTION OF MACRO-INVESTING. THAT IS, JUST
LOOKING FOR THE BIG TRENDS, AND FOLLOWING THE INEVITABLE. CALL IT
INVESTING BY THE TEXTBOOK.
FOR EXAMPLE, WITH MR G AND HIS BELOVED OVERFULL PUNCH BOWL, AND OUR TWIN DEFICITS; WE CAN SURMISE THAT THE DOLLAR WILL BE WEAKER.
AND THUS, THAT INTEREST RATES WILL BE HIGHER; AND DEFINITELY HIGHER THAN ONE PERCENT! EVEN PERHAPS A LOT HIGHER,.............sooner or later.
The problem is that, in the short and medium terms, the market is
totally RANDOM. Or worse, CONTRARY TO MACRO ECONOMIC RULES, because,
in the shorter term, the markets are controled by the market masters,
the hedge funds, or even the central banks and their shills.
THIS IS WHY SHORT AND MEDIUM TERM INVESTING ARE SO ANNOYING.
Everyone knows that the current "boom" doesn't quite pass the smell
test. It's way too reliant on Greenspan's "easy money." But, alas, you can't trade on that information.
Speaking of macro-investing, Bill Gross is featured in the weekend
FT. He says that, even as a life long Republican, he's considering
voting Democratic this year!
Gross calls Dubya: "The President for the Rich!"
Hmmm....I thought Dubya was the president for the "religious?"
Indeed, many this week have been saying that Dubya is perhaps most
religious president in US history! Hmmmm......?
But still, Dubya's kind of religiosity is highly suspect to me.
Dubya was not born religious.
He was never a religious scholar, or a student of theology.
DUBYA ONLY BECAME RELIGIOUS, LATER IN LIFE, TO HELP HIM STOP DRINKING!
Dubya's religious sensiblity seems like; FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT!
THOSE WHO ARE TRULY RELIGIOUS SHOULD TAKE NOTE OF THIS SUSPECT
CHARACTER TRAIT IN DUBYA;
WHEN DECIDING WHETHER "COMPASSIONATE ONSERVATIVISM" IS APPROPRIATE FOR A TRULY "BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN."
Because, false religion is worse than no religion at all in my view. It smacks of Hucksterism and Hypocrisy,....two traits that good people usually condemn.

WAS FLIGHT 93 SHOT DOWN?
The 911 Commission's grim details of 911 renewed one of my personal crackpot notions that Fight 93 was, in fact, shot down. And, that the shoot down is being "covered up" by Washington.
Consider:
Of all of the planes involved in 911, the details on Flight 93 are always kept oddly hush-hush.
The families were "allowed" to hear the final black box tapes, but only if they promised not to talk about it afterward.
Furthermore, why did flight 93 fly ALL THE WAY to Cleveland in a
nearly STRAIGHT LINE;
ONLY TO "CRASH" AFTER IT ATTEMPTED TO TURN EASTWARD TOWARD
WASHINGTON!!
Was Flight 93 engaged or tailed by the military jets?
And, was it forced to fly a long distance AWAY FROM IT'S INTENDED
TARGET; and then and only then, shot down, AFTER it turned to the
east? Compare the flight paths of all the 911 planes to see this
oddity.
Additionally, the so-called rushing of the cockpit by passengers,
just does not have the ring of truth to it. Is that really how
people would react: IF THEY WERE UNSURE ABOUT WHAT WAS REALLY
HAPPENING? As were we all.
This notion that the passengers deliberately crashed the plane is
just a little bit too incredible.
And, the more we know about Mr. Cheney, and his orders to shoot down planes as needed;
The more we see that a shoot down was clearly NOT out of the question with Flight 93.
Indeed, a shoot down was the "next step," BUT FOR the
supposedly "heroic actions" of the passengers.
In other words, Flight 93 was doomed, one way or other, so why not go with the "Heroic Passengers Scenario."
Fight 93 was NEVER going to make it to Washington. And, indeed, once it began to execute it's fatal eastward turn---it was all over for Flight 93.
Also, there has been great care to avoid any eye witnesses accounts, and the crash site was off limits to the media, in a very odd way afterwards.
Finally, the BBC initially reported that the plane fell from the sky in two parts! Seperated by some distance. This claim was later dropped, or at least never mentioned again by the BBC.
Lastly, there is a certain OFFICIAL STRANGENESS when the subject of Flight 93 is mentioned or discussed...............

Perhaps it's only my crackpot notion,....but think about.....?

Of all of the planes involved in 911, the details on Flight 93 are always kept oddly hush-hush.
The families were "allowed" to hear the final black box tapes, but only if they promised not to talk about it afterward.
Furthermore, why did flight 93 fly ALL THE WAY to Cleveland in a
nearly STRAIGHT LINE;
ONLY TO "CRASH" AFTER IT ATTEMPTED TO TURN EASTWARD TOWARD
WASHINGTON!!
Was Flight 93 engaged or tailed by the military jets?
And, was it forced to fly a long distance AWAY FROM IT'S INTENDED
TARGET; and then and only then, shot down, AFTER it turned to the
east? Compare the flight paths of all the 911 planes to see this
oddity.
Additionally, the so-called rushing of the cockpit by passengers,
just does not have the ring of truth to it. Is that really how
people would react: IF THEY WERE UNSURE ABOUT WHAT WAS REALLY
HAPPENING? As were we all.
This notion that the passengers deliberately crashed the plane is
just a little bit too incredible.
And, the more we know about Mr. Cheney, and his orders to shoot down planes as needed;
The more we see that a shoot down was clearly NOT out of the question with Flight 93.
Indeed, a shoot down was the "next step," BUT FOR the
supposedly "heroic actions" of the passengers.
In other words, Flight 93 was doomed, one way or other, so why not go with the "Heroic Passengers Scenario."

DUBYA'S CRACKPOT OPTIMISM
Ms. Dowd in the NYT today takes note of the "new optimism" of Dubya
lately.
Apparently, the death of Reagan has reminded Dubya that optimism is
important in politics;
Dubya seems to go off in different "kicks" now and then, about a
certain word or notion. And, he thinks that because it's new
to him, it's new to us. Well mostly, it isn't.
NOW THE NEW KICK IS: "OPTIMISM."
But still, Dubya's recent optimistic outbursts have seemed, well,
rather strange, and bizarre even.
At the Clintons' portrait ceremony Dubya was oddly off-the-cuff.
And, with the war in Iraq going to Hell in a handbasket everyday now,
Dubya's optimism may start to seem "Nixonesque" to some.
Dubya's brain is not hard-wired for "chit-chat." Indeed, it almost
seems at times that there is "nothing there" for him to call on when
he tries to be conversational.
So he resorts to "thanking people" for being present in the
audience. It's almost as if he is trying to avoid getting down to
business, ie. reading the speech. Indeed, if the telepromter should
break, the presidency would stop with it.
DUBYA'S NEW ATTEMPT AT "REAGANESQUE" OPTIMISM COULD BE MORE TROUBLE
THAN IT'S WORTH. AND I DOUBT HE CAN PULL IT OFF, ESPECIALLY NOW.
FRANKLY, I THINK DUBYA WAS MORE APPEALING TO THE GENERAL VOTER WHEN
HE WAS STILL TRYING TO HIDE THE FACT THAT HIS MIND IS A "BLANK

BECAUSE THE AVERAGE AMERICAN HAS NO INTELLECTUAL PRETENTIONS, AND
THINKS ONLY ABOUT HIS BODILY ORIFICES, A FEW "JOB SKILLS," SPORTS AND

DUBYA'S APPEAL TO THE VOTERS WAS THAT HE IS: "LIKE ME."

DUBYA: THE REPUBLICAN CARTER?
Carter had Iran.
Dubya has Iraq.
Nuff said?
Clearly, Dubya's problems in Iraq are roughly similar to what happen
to Carter in Iran.
There is a sense that the president is not in control of the
situation.
For both presidents Interest rates were/are going up.
And that's always bad, and especially in an election year.
Carter and Dubya also share the notion of ECONOMIC MALISE.
With Carter it was inflation and oil prices.
With Dubya it's jobs and oil prices.
Lastly, there is a sense in the country that Dubya is the "wrong guy
for this job." And, of course, with Carter the same notion was afoot.
INDEED, DUBYA IS LIKELY THE "REPUBLICAN CARTER." THAT IS HOW
HISTORIANS WILL SEE IT, IN MY OPINION.
And, Kerry?
POSITIVELY "ROOSEVELTIAN!" I mean, as in FDR.
Kerry's economic rhetoric, of late, has been right out of Roosevelt's
speeches from the 1930's!
Just go back and re-read some of Roosevelt's speechs from that era;
don't take my word for it.
Indeed, if Kerry's speech writers get writers block? I recommend
having a copy of FDR's oratory on their desks! (But, don't copy it
word for word already!)
KERRY COULD BE ROOSEVELTIAN IN ANOTHER SENSE. AND THAT IS AS
A "TRAITOR TO HIS CLASS."
Roosevelt and Kerry are both "patricians" in the American sense of
the word. They are from the American upper class.
JUST AS ROOSEVELT SAVED CAPITALISM FROM ITSELF, AND AVOIDED A LEFTIST
REVOLUTION.
SO TOO, KERRY MAY HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH DESTINY, AS THE SAVIOR OF:
"CONSUMER CAPITALISM" AS WE HAVE KNOWN IT FOR THE LAST HALF CENTURY.
Because what we have now is a long downward spiral to the deficit
bottom, with the Chinese Communists now PULLING THE STRINGS AND
HOLDING ALL OF THE TRUMP CARDS.
History repeats. Sort of,.............because, an era of public
interest politics always follows an era of special interest politics, like night follows day.

OSAMA TARGETS KEY SWING STATES?
Is there no end to the evil evilness of the Evil One!
News that the "heartland has been targeted for death" comes as a
shock to many in the Industrial MidWest.
Especially to those unemployed industrial workers in the middle west,
in places like Ohio, Michigan, Illnois and Wisconsin.
BECAUSE, ALL THESE ARE KEY SWING STATES THAT DUBYA MUST WIN TO GET A
SECOND TERM;
(Or, have we given up on that already?)
Anyway;
With the capture of a "suspect," (last November), who was supposedly
going to "blow up" a Shopping Mall in Columbus Ohio, the industrial
heartland can't say that Dubya & Co. isn't--"doing anything for them."
But, is The Evil One trying to influence the coming election? Well,
who knows.
Dubya is "in trouble" in the heartland because of big job losses, but
maybe Osama doesn't know that our electoral college is a "winner
takes all" system. So, "hurting Dubya" in the heartland won't have
any effect on the general election, net-net.
It makes no difference if Dubya loses Ohio 51% to 49%, or 56% to 44%,
Kerry would still get all of those electoral votes.
So, as Ashcroft says, "marking the heartland for death," won't really
change anything as to the election!
So sorry, Osama you're barking up the wrong tree in the Midwest!
But still;
I can sense a nefarious force here!
I can almost feel the bony gnarled hand of the Evil One, and his
beady little yellow eyes!

REAGAN FUNERAL: POLITICS AS THEATER
As I watched the Reagan Funeral today, it seemed to me that we are
missing the real legacy of Ronald Reagan.
It's not tax cuts or tax increases. Or Anti-Communism and the Cold War, indeed, there are still plenty of Communist nations around, eg. China, North Korea and Cuba.
And, Communist China is the fastest growing economy in the world right now!
THE REAL REAGAN LEGACY WAS HIS RECOGNITION THAT ALL MODERN POLITICS
IS THEATER!
And, it's no coincidence the that it took a Hollywood actor to teach us this!
Consider:
The nature of the presidency changed repeatedly in the 20th Century.
With the advent of women's sufferage in 1920, our presidents suddenly
changed too, as you might expect, with a huge new voting bloc to swing the elections.
With women's sufferage, the REAL MAN president, morphed into what I
would call; the MAN-BOY president.
Suddenly, sex appeal mattered!
The first president elected by the female vote was Harding, a man-boy
if there ever was one, indeed, only Clinton was more so!
Other man-boy presidents were Coolidge, Kennedy, Carter, Nixon,
Clinton and yes, Reagan.
True, some of these "man-boys" were naughtier than others!
The other post-1920 archetype: I would call the kindly uncles or
grandfatherly types. Consider: Truman, Johnson, Roosevelt,
Eisenhower.
THE POINT IS THAT AFTER 1920, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO ELECT A LINCOLN, MCKINLEY, OR A TAFT. Particularly Taft!
IN SHORT, THE FEMALE VOTE CHANGED THE WAY WE ELECT PRESIDENTS!
Deny this if you will, but it's still true.
NOW COMES REAGAN;
With Reagan we get the very first MEDIA AGE PRESIDENT.
By the time Reagan was elected, the role of the media in shaping
our political reality was off and running.
So it was only a matter of time before we tapped an actor to play the
role of president in our new media age political theater.
Alas, Arnie in California is no accident either! More like a trend?
It is also no accident that, since Reagan, the only other two term
president was Clinton; who also understood that POLITICS IS
THEATER, and Clinton was the ultimate man-boy president.
INDEED, THIS NEW REALITY OF POLITICS AS THEATER MIGHT EXPLAIN THE CURRENT LIBERAL DILEMMA OF WHY THE WORKING CLASSES ALWAYS SEEM TO VOTE AGAINST THEIR OWN BEST INTERESTS. (See today's NYT for an op-ed to that effect.)
PERHAPS, THE WORKING CLASSES ARE BUYING INTO THE MESSENGER, AND NOT THE DEEPER MESSAGE? If so, this could be RATHER ominous.............

but Facism's evil methods and techniques were allowed to go underground, where they lay buried for a generation.

right-wing nationalist movements afoot in many nations, like in the US, Russia, Israel, and in the Muslim nations, to name only a few;
WE MUST BE VERY CAUTIOUS!
POLITICS IS ABOUT SOCIAL AND PUBLIC POLICY; IT IS NOT ABOUT
THEATRICS!
NOR, IS OUR ECONOMY ABOUT THEATER. THE ECONOMY IS ABOUT HOW PEOPLE
LIVE, AND WHAT THEY DO EACH AND EVERY DAY.
THE ECONOMY IS REALLY MUCH MORE "SOCIAL," THAN THE ECONOMISTS LEAD YOU TO THINK.
BECAUSE THE ECONOMY "KEEPS PEOPLE BUSY," AND A BUSY PEOPLE ARE A HAPPY PEOPLE.

SECOND HAND LIVES
With cheap goods flooding the markets nowadays, one has to ask:
Where is the old stuff going?
I know that people are hauling stuff out of Walmart and Target by the
car load, but were are they putting it?
CLEARLY, THERE IS A GLUT OF "USED GOODS" LOOMING IN THE ECONOMY.
Can the presence of millions of used cars, ultimately surpress the
sale of new cars?
I mean you can spend $3000 or $30,000 on a car today and still have
reasonably reliable transportation. Gone are the rattle-trap junkers
of the 1970's.
Thrift Shops Abound. And, high quality used merchandise is
everywhere.
AND THEN THERE IS THE "E-BAY EFFECT" THAT MAKES BUYING USED
RESPECTABLE.
Or, "Vin is In!" Second Hand Lives really.
Indeed, the only difference between the rich and the poor in our
brave new economy of Goods Glut is: TASTE!
Persumably the rich buy for quality, or "the label," like the
Japanese.
And, the poor buy things that look "pretty."
The real difference between the rich and the poor might end up being
their tolerance level for polyester!!
Of course there are still plenty of "rich," who seem to have more
money than brains!
How else can you explain: "The Hummer!"
IN THE NEW ECONOMY, GLUT WILL BE THE NORM!
Therefore, Good Taste will be the final arbiter of fashion going
forward.
Because scarcity is sooooo.....20th Century!

UN AS BLUE FAIRY IN IRAQ?
Can Pinocchio become a "real boy?" Call the Blue Fairy.
In Iraq, the question is will the UN "blue fairy" be able to turn the
US "Puppet Government" into a "real government." The answer is NO.
Clearly, the UN had little to do with the selection of the interim
government in Iraq.
Indeed, the UN representives have been barely able to hide their
disappointment with the new "CIA Guy" who's going to be running
Iraq's new government on July first.
Thus, I would expect VERY LITTLE HELP from the UN or NATO after July.
Additionally, LOCAL forces in Iraq seem determined, Hell-Bent even,
to DISCREDIT any US backed, trained or sanctioned "security force."
THE VERY BEST THAT DUBYA AND THE NEOCONS CAN HOPE FOR IS A VERY, VERY
LOOSE "FEDERATION" OF IRAQI POWER CENTERS.
The "new federal government" in Iraq might simply be in charge of
distribution of oil money, and border patrols.
For all practical purposes the Kurds, Shia and Sunni parts of federal
Iraq will be self governing and INDEPENDENT.
(Perhaps, it might resemble those "independent republics" that the
Soviet Union had back in the days of the Cold War.)
In short, the world's weakest central govenment is only befitting the
world's most heterogeneous and divided country.
THIS VERY LOOSE FEDERATION OF IRAQI STATES MIGHT BE THE BEST, AND
INDEED ONLY, WAY TO AVOID THE OFT PREDICTED CIVIL WAR.
Finally, the American notion of "mixing up" the various militias into
a new "national army" is just a really stupid non-starter. Nuts
really.
Likely, trying to mix Sunni, Shia, and Kurd militias will fail
miserably and ASAP.
Why? Well, did school integration really "work" in the US system?
No. American schools are more segrated now than ever. Ergo;
THE SOONER THE US GIVES UP ON THE IDEA OF AN INTEGRATED CENTRALIZED
NATIONAL GOVERNMENT IN IRAQ THE BETTER.
And, if the new US "Pinocchio Government" pushes too hard for a strong central government for post war Iraq;
Even the "Blue Fairy" won't be able to save Pinocchio from the
factionalism that Dubya's Disasterous War has now unleased!
IRAQ IS THE "NEW YUGOSLAVIA!" NOT THE "NEW DEMOCRACY" IN THE MIDDLE
EAST. SORRY WOLFIE.....
JUST GET USED TO IT...................

THE RAY-GUN YEARS
Truman Capote said that one big difference between the rich and the
poor is how they prepare vegetables.
Likewise, one big difference between Democrats and Republicans is how
they spend money.
Republicans prefer Defense Spending for the Pentagon.
Democrats prefer Domestic Spending for Ordinary People.
Both Dutch and Dubya were BIG SPENDERS ON THE MILITARY.
But consider;
IS MILITARY SPENDING BECOMING OBSOLETE?
FOR ALL THAT MONEY SPENT DURING THE RAY-GUN YEARS; WHAT DO WE HAVE TO
SHOW FOR IT?
ALMOST NOTHING. All those missles and the A-Bombs are now obsolete,
or too horrible to think about. Especially in the hands of
terrorists.
The bigger world seems to have given up invading other nations. At
least all except for the US!
INDEED, MASSIVE STANDING ARMIES MAY NOW BE AN HISTORICAL ANOMALY BECAUSE OF THE LETHAL NATURE OF MODERN WEAPONRY! Indeed, "massing" anything nowadays may be "asking for for trouble!"
Consider;
The 9-11 attack was the work of 19 men with "box cutters." Not a
single "high tech" weapon, or WMD, in sight.
And, what the US fears most now is a terrorist with a "suitcase
bomb," NOT a missle attack.
AMAZINGLY, THE GREAT ARMS RACE OF THE COLD WAR IS NOW THE NEMESIS OF
AMERICA.
THE COLD WAR ARMS RACE HAS BECOME AMERICA'S FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER
REALLY. We created it, but now we fear it's aftermath.
ALL THOSE WEAPONS WE AND THE SOVIETS MADE? WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Whose buying and selling what in the Ukraine, or in the "stans?" Does
anyone really know. Can we "smart bomb" our way to "secruity?"
The US is rightly proud of it's "smart bombs," but look at the
smart bombing aftermath in Iraq!
Some "smart leadership" would have been infinitely better. Or was it
just an off-the-cuff war, that we forgot to competely plan for?
Trillions for Defense; and what to we get for it: Sick S&M photos
from a Baghdad Prison!
Now I know why the military has it's: "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy!
EVEN WHILE THE REST OF THE WORLD IS SPENDING MONEY ON DOMESTIC
MATTERS, LIKE HEALTH CARE, AND EDUCATION, AND INFRASTRUCTURE;
THE US CONTINUES TO POUR BILLIONS INTO OBSOLETE WEAPONS SYSTEMS THAT
WILL NOT PREVENT THE NEXT TERRORIST ATTACK;
AND INDEED, MIGHT MAKE IT MORE LIKELY............!
SO, WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THE COLD WAR ARMS RACE DURING THE RAY-GUN

MOURNING IN AMERICA: THE REAGAN LEGACY
The pundits are having a field day remembering the Reagan years.
Optimism! Winning the Cold War! Tax cuts! Its' all there.
Reagan taught us that a HAPPY message and messenger are important.
People don't want to hear the GLOOM AND DOOM. They want a
messenger who is upbeat. The Happy Warrior.
The only problem is that somebody has to do the worrying, because:
"Don't Worry Be Happy!" Can put you in the toilet real fast.
Alas, as we found out with Ronny, and now with Dubya!
The STARVE THE BEAST tax cuts really started in the Reagan
administration. And, it took ten years, and a lot of luck to dig out
of that hole.
BUT NOW WE'RE BACK IN THE HOLE THANKS TO ANOTHER "HAPPY WARROR"
NAMELY DUBYA.
GUNS, BUTTER AND TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH SEEM TO BE THE REAGAN LEGACY!
AND DUBYA IS SPENDING HIS LEGACY LIKE A DRUNKEN FRAT BOY!
While the boomer retirements loom Dubya cuts taxes.
While tens of millions are uninsured and American big business begs
for help on medical costs; Dubya & Co are providing seminars on how
to relocate in China! NOW THAT SOLVES THE PROBLEM!
VERY LIKELY DUBYA WILL BE THE LAST "REAGAN REPUBLICAN" IN THE WHITE
HOUSE.
THE REAGAN REVOLUTION IS OVER! AND AS WE CONSIDER THE REAGAN LEGACY
AND IT'S CURRENT REMAINDER LEGATEE IN THE WHITE HOUSE;
THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES ARE CLEAR.
WHAT "COULD WE HAVE DONE" WITH ALL THAT ARMS RACE MONEY AND
BRINKSMANSHIP DIPLOMACY!
HEALTH CARE! EDUCATION! ENVIRONMENT AND INFRASTRUTURE!
ALL OF THOSE MASSIVE WEAPONS THAT WE, AND THE SOVIETS, STUPIDLY BUILT
NOW HANG OVER US LIKE THE SWORD OF DAMOCLESE; WHAT IF OSAMA HAPPENS
TO GET HOLD OF THEM?
THE REAGAN REVOLUTION IS OVER. AND PERHAPS IT IS TIME FOR "MOURNING IN AMERICA" BECAUSE OF IT'S AFTERMATH.
But still, I've a hunch that a truly Kinder and Gentler World is in
the offing. Waiting to come out...........

News that GM is moving to China is interesting.
GM has a fair share of the Chinese car market already, but that may
be temporary, as China, like the rest of the world, likely prefers
Japanese and German cars over US models long term, but then, of
course, there is the "pity buy" factor to consider and all of those
dollars to spend.
STILL, THE ENTIRE RECENT "GLOBAL BOOM" SEEMS TO BE BASED ON THE
CHINA'S
CAPACITY EXPANSION!
The Japan recovery is really based on China's boom. And, indeed, the
MASSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE BUILD OUT in China is apparently the NEW
ENGINE OF GROWTH IN THE WORLD!
Remember, in the old days when the US had that job?
IN EFFECT, WE ARE "RE-BUILDING" THE ENTIRE WORLDS PRODUCTIVE CAPACITY
IN CHINA!

REAGANOMICS: THE LONG GOOD BYE
Sometime around 1980 the American middle class started to lose ground.
Perhaps it was with the passage of the 401k law, which killed off the
private sector defined benefit pension in favor of letting Joe and
Jane Sixpack speculate on Wall Street for their "retirements."
Perhaps it was with the firing of the air traffic controllers, which
announced the demise of private sector unions, even though public
sector unions thrived, and now control vast wealth in pension funds
like CALPERS.
Perhaps it was with the 20% prime rates that made the dollar strong,
(after the 1971 Bretton Woods Debacle), and American Industry weak
and uncompetitive in international markets.
Perhaps it was with the Reagan restoration of the wasteful Military-
Industrial Complex.
Perhaps it was the birth of the Reagan Democrats, who were content
with a leader who was an affable and uncurious master of ceremonies,
that make them "feel good" about their declining status. Reagan was
truly the harbinger of the uncurious Poppy and Dubya Bushs to come.
Perhaps Reaganomics was the luck of coming into office AFTER the Fed
had finished the GREAT INTEREST RATE INDUCED RECESSION of the 70's.
Then CDs went from 16% to 7% during Reagan's first term in office.
THEN AND ONLY THEN WAS THE WALL STREET MIRACLE SET OFF ON IT'S LONG
MARCH TO THE "GREED IS GOOD" BUBBLES OF THE 1990's.
Was Reagan a great president. In a word, No. Reagan's presidency
marked the beginning of the decline of the middle class in America.
He was the happy master of ceremonies who made us feel good about the
slow decline of American Industry.
He introduced the wedge issue politics that "won the South" for
Republicans for a generation.
The Reagan Presidency was the beginning of America's decline from a
DEMOCRACY to the WALL STREET PLUTOCRACY we have today with it's
rampant greed and corruption.
But, there is hope, the Election of 2004 may mark the end of:

Better yet, we can now predicted with absolute certainty that 250,000 plus jobs will be created every month from now till the election in November. (After which I would expect a serious slowdown.)
Now, the labor force participation rate is frozen in place. And, hours and wages are not moving much. And, big companies are still announcing major layoffs, and plant closings. And, retail spending is lackluster.

This is totally unlike most other parts of the world that have
traditions of "Idolizing" their intellectuals and encouraging
learning.
Can you name an American actor? Sports star? TV personality? Of
course.
But, can you name an "American Intellecual?"
EVEN I CAN'T! And, that's bad! OK, maybe Oprah.....or Matt and Katy.

Well, you reap what you sow; and academically American kids don't
have a chance compared to kids in India, China, Japan and even Russia

BOOM AND GLOOM
The world seems to be divided into two parts;
GLOBAL CAPITAL as represented by Wall Street. And, NATIONAL CAPITAL represented by Main Street.
It's a story of Boom for one, and Gloom for the other.
Even as Wall Street soars, on cheap foreign labor and even cheaper domestic money;
The mood on Main Street is one of gloom.
EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT "THE RECOVERY," BUT IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE SOMEONE ELSE'S RECOVERY. IT'S ALWAYS SOMEWHERE ELSE, NOT HERE.
People are flocking to Las Vegas according to the NYT. All Lost Vegas Losers it seems.
YET GLOBAL CAPITAL MOVES TO CHINA AND ASIA; EVEN AS CITIES IN EUROLAND ARE DYING SLOWLY FROM LOW BIRTH RATES AND DECLINING COMPETITIVENESS.
IN THE US, EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE WALL STREET BOOM ON TOUT TV, BUT YET IT'S HARD TO FIND IN "REAL LIFE." Maybe it's in Las Vegas? Hmmmm.....?
And, these rather punk-to-average employment numbers are "spun" so fast that they catch fire. Result; the bond market "crashes" for a couple of weeks.
Then, reality sets in again, and the bond stabilizes back to the levels expected in a down to slow economy.
The Dow breaks 10,000 again and again.
Ground Hog's Day on Wall Street. But the suckers keep flocking.
Everything is at 40 year highs, or lows, whatever is needed to make the rosy scenario;
But somehow all these extremes just seem to cancel each other out!
The result is always ZERO! ---At the end of the day but with much fanfare and Hosannas from the experts and pundits.
WE ARE GOING NOWHERE, BUT IN A BIG BIG HURRY.
THIS "ZERO SUM GAME" YEILDS NOTHING; EXCEPT, OF COURSE, COMMISSIONS FOR THE BROKERS.
Maybe that's all we can hope for now...............

LAME BRAIN NOW A LAME DUCK?
News that Kerry is "going positive" should strike fear in the hearts
of Republicans.
The Dubya ad-buys have been all negative all the time, and all really
simple minded to boot.
OK, OK, Kerry flip-flopped!
But with 20 years in the legislative process there is plenty of
opportunity to change positions.
Every bill cries out for a flip flop, if the legistlator is "doing
his/her job" properly.
But with Dubya sinking into the low 40's now;
The Kerry Team will start to have an aura of inevitability around
them--soon.
Worse yet, Dubya will likely become a total persona non grata
internationally; If he isn't already!
And, even if/when Iraq and the economy "turn around," SOMEHOW, which
I doubt; will anyone really want FOUR MORE YEARS of this! I doubt it.
By the time of the Republican Convention, Dubya's re-election bid is
very likely going to be "drawing flys." BIG TIME!
The Lame Brain will have become a Lame Duck; even before the election
results are in.
Why?
BECAUSE DUBYA WILL NOT WIN, RUNNING FROM HIS RECORD, INSTEAD OF ON IT!

member of the new government would go into public places anywhere in
Iraq.
And does anyone really believe that Americans are going to give guns
and training to the "New Iraqi Army?" That last time we tried that
they all went AWOL, and TOOK OUR GUNS WITH THEM!
Next Americans will be fighting the "New Iraqi Army" for the oil
fields of Iraq! Talk about "Wolfie's Last Stand!"
INDEED, THE JIHADI AND THE SADRITES COULD START FORMING A "SHADOW
GOVERNMENT" AFTER JULY 1!! Would'nt that be interesting?
But this notion that the Iraqi people will now "accept" the "CIA Guy"
over the "Pentagon Guy" is a little bit nutty.
Worse yet, IF anyone in the new government goes "native" and starts

OIL IS GOING UP!
INTEREST RATES ARE GOING UP!
DUBYA IS GOING TO LOSE, AND PROBABLY BIG! (Not a bad thing really)
THE MIDDLE EAST OIL REGIONS ARE DE-STABILIZING MORE AND MORE EVERYDAY!
CHINA'S COMMUNISTS ARE ABOUT TO SHOW THE CAPITALIST WEST WHAT "GLUT"
REALLY MEANS!
ASHCROFT SAYS A "HARD" TERROR HIT IS NEAR CERTAIN THIS SUMMER!
ALTHOUGH RIDGE SEEMS TO DISAGREE!
THE HOUSING BUBBLE IS THE NEXT BIG BUBBLE TO BURST! AND IT'S A
