When Bernanke started at the FED the FED statements were much longer... Now they are simply brief comments that ignore a host of issues...like the dollar, the deficits, gold, oil...etc.
There's the entire statement from the FED today...that cause the hysterical "rally" on Wall Street...
(These guys need to find something else to occupy their time; beside staring into a computer monitor...!)
THE FED SAID:
"Recent indicators have suggested somewhat firmer economic growth, and some tentative signs of stabilization have appeared in the housing market. Overall, the economy seems likely to expand at a moderate pace over coming quarters.
Readings on core inflation have improved modestly in recent months, and inflation pressures seem likely to moderate over time. However, the high level of resource utilization has the potential to sustain inflation pressures.
The Committee judges that some inflation risks remain. The extent and timing of any additional firming that may be needed to address these risks will depend on the evolution of the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information."

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE...BASED ON PUBLIC GULLIBILITY TO GOVERNMENT LIES?
It's amazing the number of people who say "jobs are easy to get"...what kind of jobs are they talking about...?
Cashier jobs at the local drug store where turn over is 100% per month...? Or at Walmart and MickyD's where turnover is also high...? Or standing out in front of Home Depot for a chance at "day labor...?"
Most companies are downsizing their "good jobs" ASAP. And farming out the rest...at least those that can't go directly to Mexico or China.
And what of this from the link:

Economists say the confidence index doesn't predict consumer behavior particularly well, but it seems to respond to changes in the labor market and to gasoline prices.

The problem is that any doomsday scenario would likely be so psychologically and socially disruptive that all the rules would change overnight...
What most futurists miss is that civil society itself is very very fragile...
The only reason that the police department can "control" things...is because 99.9% of the population is out of the picture at any given time...
If 1 % of the population becomes "disruptive" you have a riot...and the national guard is called out...
If 2% of the population becomes "disruptive"...you have chaos and the national guard and police flee the scene...
If 5% is disruptive you have anarchy...
If 10% is out of control you have revoluation...
There is also the psychological breakdown of the public that leads to doomsday thinking..."saviors" are always predicted...ritual ghost dances are performed...as happened with the Native American population in the 1890's.

IRAN MEASURING THE DRAPES IN BAGHDAD...
The inevitability of Iranian influence in the new Shia Greenzone government...is not what Bush had in mind...
But it is what he will get nevertheless... Any attempt to split the Iranian Shia and the Iraqi Shia will likely come to no good end for the US...because at the end of the day, or year, the Muslims of the middle east will never become "pro-American" or "pro-Zionist"...it's just not possible.

DEMOCRATS NEED TO RE-REFORM BANKRUPTCY CODE
The Republican reform of the Bankruptcy Code was so ANTI-CONSUMER and PRO-BANK...that great injustices are being done to the American working consumer...
One of the first things the new Democratic Congress might want to do is correct some of the more blatant wrongs done to endebted consumers by the code changes of last year...
For example the "means test" might be raised to 150% of the state's average wage...
And the penalties against persons who merely prepare bankruptcy forms...could to eased.
Chapter 13's almost never work out... So forcing people who should be in Chapter 7 into a Chater 13 is not benefiting anyone...especially not the banks and credit card companies.
Now that the new statute has been in effect for over a year....the "bugs" have been discovered...and they should be corrected by the Democrats ASAP.

Stocks and eventually the dollar will be less attractive to foreigners...which leaves open the question: What the Hell is going on with Oil...? Was the big run up all based on hopes for more Republican Looting in Kongress...and none of it on the dollar or demand from China...?
Will gold "go it alone" and diverge from oil...? It doesn't make sense... But then the Saudis claim that plunging oil prices is "healthy" also doesn't make sense... With Gold stocks near 52 week lows ....some opportunities should appear...especically if gold does not go down as fast as oil...

The timing of the hangings in Baghdad could not have been worse... What with the big "all or nothing at all" surge coming on... And the hoped for Sunni "buy-in" to the Iranian backed Shia puppet government now in the Green Zone...

The markets now are really crash-proof...with the FED and the big brokers and banks always hovering looking for any sign of weakness... The Dow is really an interest bearing bank account now...all the guess work has been taken out of it...
Yes there will be thrills and spills along the way...but the markets will mostly just track the economy with perhaps a one or two percent advantage...to reflect their "protected" status in Washington and on Wall Street...

But, where will the manpower come from? And the money...?
Many people think that Bush is taking his advise from Joe Leiberman, the Senator from Israel... And that could be true...
Most of what's happening in the middle east seems to be dicated by the Israeli ultra-right....not the Republican Party. And Republicans are jumping ship in droves.
Also note that Bush is talking about "expanding" the military. I suspect that he would greatly like a draft--if he could get it.

But there is still massive liquidity bidding up assets...or at least maintaining them...
However, the house crash will continue to plague the consumption side all year... Not to mention debt, punk jobs, and over supply of goods...
So we could have a disinflationary economy...even in the face of massive dollar printing from the past bubble daze.
Or more likely the excess liquidity could combine with the weak consumer for the nightmare scenario...stagflation...which I suspect is what will really happen after all the screaming is over...

MARKETS MAY OPT FOR DISTRIBUTION
A managed market that can not go up...will usually distribute.
My hunch is that in times of over-bought conditions like now, we will see a series of small daily moves as the market masters unload "inventory" to weaker hands...and start shorting stock for the eventual downturn.
And there is a lot of over priced stock to unload, from the "election" moonshot rally in the last half of 06, so this could take a while...
Gold and oil should stabilze from the recent market master induced selling frenzy that was intented to tell all retail investors that buying gold is a "no-no" for the little guy... So don't even think about going away from managed "paper assets."
The Saudis are already cutting their oil production...so a period of gentle drift should ensue...
