Kerry should be pounding the Iraq War for the rest of this election cycle... It's amazing how the Republicans can twist something like Bush's dismal war record into a positive talking point...
And Democratic criticism of the botched war effort into criticism of the troops...

Ever notice that the Dollar is always "higher" but it never actually gets anywhere? Surely there must be some days when the dollar is lower...but those don't make the headlines... The Economics of Happy Face rules the market.

Even stories that should be dollar negative are dollar positive because...the negative story...implies that "something" will happen to turn things around to the "positive"...so the dollar can actually rise on negative news OR positive news....is that a little confusing?

Walmart's dismal sales forecast could be bad news for Republicans in the coming election.
Remember most Walmarts are out in rural/exurban areas for the most part...
So they don't really compete with retailers like Tar-Jay or Kohls OR any of the other BIG BOX URBAN RETAILERS...
But Walmart's captive Bubba shoppers are NOT SHOPPING lately!
Perhaps it's that summer gas hike for the F150 that's still eating Bubba... Or maybe the punk job market. And low wages. Or the decline in manufacturing... Or maybe the neighbors kid was killed in Iraq...? Maybe Guns, God and Gays isn't what it used to be for rural Bubba Republicans and assorted "good ole boys"...

Perhaps 40 to 50 seats in the House and 10+ in the Senate...this could be the wake up call to Washington and Wall Street that they can't rely on wedge issues forever...sooner or later their looting of the economy will have to stop...and some kind of realistic Progressive Agenda will be needed....
That said, there should be no illusions about measures the elites and International Capital will take to defend their indefencible looting...
Just look at Mexico today...! America in the 21st Century will resemble a Latin American nation in the 20th Century....
It's not just illegal Mexicans that are coming across the border...it's their military dictatorships and oppressive economic systems as well...!

The Republicans are in "swift boat" mode again...all the better to confuse their Bubba Base...so Wall Street can continue looting the economy for a couple more years.
But this time they have a track record that is dismal...and my hunch is that the Bubba Base ain't gonna buy what the Republicans are sellin' this time...
Yes, there is gay marriage, and liberals forcing abortions on teenage girls...and raising taxes on the middle class...since the rich don't seem to pay taxes anymore after 20 years of Republican domination of the Kongress....
But still, I just can't picture some sane "ordinary person" walking into a voting booth in a couple weeks and saying: YES I WANT MORE OF THIS!
It just ain't gonna happen... Rove most be smokin' the same stuff Dubya has been on!
My sense is that the religious right feels that they have been duped and dumped on by the Republicans and their Wall Street backers... The "social agenda" is all talk and no walk...

The big drive down of commodities is THE STORY for the rest of this year...and it's really the sine qua non for the "rally" of late in over-priced equities...
But what has changed to cause commodities to drop...? The FED has quit raising rates...and will stay on hold until the dollar weakens again...perhaps next summer...?
The FED is pursuing a weak dollar policy even as commodities are weakening...and the dollar is going up! Hey maybe it's a "Zen thing?"

A WORTHLESS RALLY...
Todays rally was supposedly about Walmart CUTTING BACK EXPANSION PLANS...
Well, that's worth 100+ on the Dow!
The market will rally again on the FED "Chicken Out" on inflation tomorrow...and so on and so on...
The only problem is we are getting in bubble territory again...and the FED seems totally hamstrung... Supposedly the retail suckers are flocking to stocks again...but I doubt it.
This is just one of those bubble rallys that will rise till it falls... The entire thing is based on bashing gold and declining oil prices...
Will the election end the decline in oil prices...? Who knows...
Thismarket is strickly for the insiders...any Newbie putting in new money will likely lose big-time later this year...
Of course if the dollar doesn't hold up...the Dow can go to 13,000 and still be worth less...in real terms, than it was at the beginning of the year...!

But Kerry could be a nostalgic repeat for a cause that "should have been," but for Ohio's mistake...provided however, he decides to say what he means, and mean what he says for a change...without regard to "the polls."

The Street has convinced the FED that any more rate hikes will derail stocks...and the brokerage community is willing to throw a tantrum to prove it...

BASH GOLD AND ALL IS WELL IN THE MARKETS
Who'd a thought it would all be so easy....
Of course you do have to "protect" your currency...
And that means less spending and having higher rates...
Which means a slower economy.
And a decline in asset speculation...in stocks and real estate...as more people opt for a "safe" return from the bank and avoid the asset markets.
And that means an even slower economy.
Especially with no "back up" industries that actually "make stuff" to support your trade deficits...and your currency!
And that means....?

NORTH KOREA IS TOTALLY UNDER THE CONTROL OF CHINA
China is using North Korea as a straw man to gain a geopolitical credibility...that matches it's new global economic power.
China could crush North Korea like a bug if the North Koreans got too far out of line...
Indeed, sometimes it seems that North Korea is merely a puppet of China... with the Korean "client state" saying things that China would like to say...if it only could.
Or do people in Washington think China really "respects" them...?
This Neocon notion of having US ships "inspecting" shipping off the Korean coast would be too close for comfort for China...
And our little list of "horrors" that Bush & Bolton want to place on North Korea simply makes the US look more foolish and out of touch...since everyone knows the "super-power" is tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan...BOTH of which are spinning completely out of control...
Bolton's moves at the UN are making the US into a laughing stock...matchings his boss's blunders in the White House.

IS THIS WORTH A BILLION...
I don't see it... It's nice. It's well designed. It's simple. But is it really interesting...longer term...after the novelty wears off...?
This reminds me of the old dot com daze where everyone was getting into everything...
Perhaps the Internet needs to rest for a while...and let things settle out... What works. What doesn't.
It's also quite possible that the Internet has "maxed out" ....those areas that are improved by the Internet are already in place.
And those areas that are never going to be able to use the net well... perhaps never will?

But, does video uploading have legs longer term...? Or, will it become one more over-hyped Internet Fad like web cams, blogs and alas, the recent dot com e-commerce disaster?

In any new area of technology there is a period where: IF YOU CAN DO IT...YOU DO DO IT.
No consideration is given to whether or not...ANYONE ACTUALLY WHAT'S WHAT YOUR DOING...
The best example is the early automobile industry...
In the early days of the auto industry there were literally hundreds of car makers...each with some exotic notion or idea that might make them different...
GM bought up hundreds of these companies to get their ideas and notions, but most of them never panned out... And, with the ones that were viable, often there was a lacked of need by the public.
That is really were the Internet is today...
IF IT CAN BE DONE. IT WILL BE DONE....WHETHER OR NOT ANYONE REALLY WANTS, OR NEEDS IT...
Google, like GM before it, is acting as a consolidator of innovations, a random buyer of new ideas or weird notions...some of which will fail, but some of which could become the "next big thing."
Still, my hunch is that the next big thing will be the convergence of television and the Internet in a very big and compelling way.
In the future everyone will be able to have their own "talk show," and it will be available globally...to anyone who is interested in watching...alas, probably only their families.
In the future, everyone will be connected to everything...and everything will be available 24.7.
MAYBE THE NEXT BIG THING SHOULD BE AN AGGREGATOR OF INTERNET QUALITY...NOT QUANTITY?

The number of "unemployed" (-170,000) is dropping as thousands (152,000) have quit looking for work. A few are probably taking a crack at forced "self employment" or maybe selling stuff on Ebay, etc... Yet more are re-entering the labor force AFTER their self employment dreams blow up...and they're forced to "get real" again...
Basically the American worker is being whip-sawed by global economic forces like never before...and this economic discontent is likely to be more important in "fly-over-country" than Iraq, flag burning, or homos in the coming election... But don't look for that story in the mainstream media...IT ISN'T THERE!!
